Introduction to AIVC Humanities Project

Arizona Institute of Virtual Campuses (AIVC) is a fictional humanities project that takes place in the year 2081. At the time of creation in 2024, the designer of AIVC, Tyler Brown, is a ASU student. The design of the website is intended to function as a school website for the fictional school AIVC. In the year 2081, AIVC is a digital campus with artificial intelligence (AI) instructors that students attend through virtual reality (VR) for both K12 and higher education. With a primary focus on education accessibility for individuals with cognitive disabilities, AIVC explores the potential use of current VR and AI technologies if software and hardware companies focused VR and AI application in the educational domain.

Current Scope of VR Technology:

While looking onto modern VR technology, the primary research domain was Metaverse. Metaverse is a developing VR realm in which users can actively interact with each other in the digital world. Faizan Alam, in his article “Exploring the Metaverse: A Glimpse into the Future of Virtual Reality,” explores the applications and limitations of the Metaverse project. Alam describes the Metaverse as “an extension of the virtual reality experience” (par. 5). The applications of the Metaverse are primarily focused in culture and entertainment. Alam outlines uses such as “attending a virtual concert with friends from different parts of the world, exploring a virtual museum, or even working collaboratively in a virtual office space” (par. 6). The Metaverse is further described as a place where “users can interact with each other, explore virtual environments, and engage in a wide range of activities, much like in the physical world” (Alam par. 5). The AIVC project seeks to apply technology such as the Metaverse and VR to an educational setting. This technology has “immense potential in shaping the future of virtual reality,” and AIVC seeks to demonstrate the technology’s ability to shape the future of education as well (Alam par.7).

The Current Use of AI Inside VR Technologies:

The exploration of AI inside of VR technology is again focused on advancements in the Metaverse. Alam explains:

Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in the Metaverse, as it enables intelligent virtual characters and objects to interact with users in a natural and lifelike manner. AI algorithms can analyze user behavior and preferences to generate personalized and dynamic content, enhancing the overall immersive experience. (par. 14)

This concept as applied to AIVC would be seen in the form of AI educators. Taking the ability of AI mentioned by Alam, AI educators would be able to quickly provide interventions and individualized education plans for students. These AI educators would function as an avatar in the virtual world, and students would be able to interact with them as they would a traditional teacher. Furthermore, AI will be able to teach any subject without error. In “Can AI Teach Humans? Humans AI Collaboration for Lifelong Machine Learning,” Xianbin Hong et al. explores the limitation of AI. Hong’s conclusion is that AI would be able to reach unparalleled ability that cannot be imagined by the human mind: “Under lifelong machine learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI) should become stronger and stronger and reach a superhuman level. If AI obtains a significant advance, humans will have to rely on it in many fields.” (427). This superhuman level of ability in many fields is an option of the future, it would be logical to apply AI’s ability to master many subjects to the teaching profession.

Even in modern times, the disabled community escapes to the “sanctuary” of the digital word (Shayda Kafai 118). In the book Crip Kinship, Shayda Kafai voices awareness of common challenges that the disabled community faces in modern times. In this text, Kafai refers to the digital world as a “sanctuary,” which is an extremely strong term:

Here, home becomes an expansive place, hundreds of thousands of miles wide. Home becomes Sins Central, becomes global viewing parties where we all teleport to performances in San Francisco. Home becomes the dance floor for a cripped out dance party, becomes space for learning. This type of digital home and community space, for many of us, becomes our sanctuary (118)

This concept alone became a core part of the AIVC project. How can society better this sanctuary? How can this preference be utilized and explored for the benefit everyone? AIVC seeks to be the answer to these questions through the use of AI social robots and virtual reality. As AI and VR technologies advance, the world will begin to see less and less human driven roles. Individuals will have AI avatars roaming their homes and taking on caretaker roles: “Social robots are autonomous machines that generally follow social behavior norms and interact with humans in various settings . . .  social robots may take on the role of a teacher, tutor, peer, or even a care-seeking companion” (Kim et al. 1903). Augmented reality is currently used to assist in every major occupational field. When the power of augmented reality becomes combined with the future of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, it is only a matter of time until AI controlled avatars begin to replace major caretakers in the lives of children. Children will see a world that constantly adapts to their needs in real time removing the need for educators, guardians, and exploration. the knowledge of the world is in the livingroom.

Timeline:

The advancement of artificial intelligence skyrocketed in 2026 when Metaverse 2 introduced
artificially intelligent avatars to their world. The AI began to learn so quickly from interacting with
users in virtual reality that it was soon included in augmented reality technologies such as Google
Glass. It didn't take long for Google Glass to become a major part of every education institution.

By 2041, Google Glass was a required part of curriculum for education facilities. AI avatars assisted teachers through augmented reality. It wasn't long until institutions questioned the need for human educators. Once implemented, AI was cheaper and more knowledgeable than humans. It was free of error. After a few years, Google and Meta joined forces to release virtual reality technology like no one had ever seen before. They created a universe that could be explored from your living room. K12 and higher education institutions began closing down locations because it was far more cost effective for students to attend from home through AR. The education system became cheat proof because AI teachers were in the home with their students. AI avatars became part of the home. Parent's would leave their children with their AI sitters and pursue stuff they didn't have time to do before. The world as a whole became much more educated because education was cheap, effective, entertaining, and engaging.

By 2062, companies had created a cleaner world in general. Advancements in water filtration have
given the whole world clean water, which further reduced illness. The availability of clean water
increased the production of food in areas that didn't have it before. The filtration plants were
combined with turbines to generate clean electricity from the water filtration process, which led to
more advancements of the suits; however, it was still difficult to get around.

2081: Today, society remains limited in terms of long travel, but the world's greatest minds are
looking for solutions. There isn't really anyone left who was from the Pre-Meta era. While we still face our challenges, the world is generally a better place. Discrimination and bias are ancient topics. We use clean suits when we're out and about, and with the use of augmented reality built into the suits, individuals look however they choose to. My AI teacher's avatar is a parrot that follows me everywhere I go, and my avatar is a pirate. We're all working towards a better future. The divisions of politics, race, ethnicity, and even country don't exist anymore.
